When to Fly: Year-Round and Seasonal Flights to Roatán

Year-round flights. American flies to Roatán from Miami every day of the year, which makes Miami the most reliable gateway. United flies from Houston five days a week (Thursday through Monday) and daily over the holidays, from mid-February to early May and from late May to early August. Delta flies from Atlanta on Saturdays, adding more days from December 20 to April 10, with flights five days a week over the holidays. American from Dallas flies at least on Saturdays all season, and TAG Airlines (Guatemala City) and Tropic Air (Belize) fly to Roatán several days a week year-round.

The holiday peak. Between December 17 and January 6 Roatán has its widest choice of flights: American flies daily from both Miami and Dallas, United daily from Houston, Delta five days a week from Atlanta, and every Canadian winter route is running.

Winter seasonal flights. The Canadian routes run from mid-November or mid-December into April: Air Canada from Montreal (Saturdays) and Toronto (Sundays), Sunwing from Montreal (Mondays) and WestJet from Toronto. Sun Country adds Fridays from Minneapolis from December 11 to April 9, and United flies from Denver on Saturdays from October 31 to April 24.

Summer flights. From late May to early August, United flies daily from Houston and adds Saturday flights from Denver (May 29 to August 7), while American keeps flying from Dallas (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and Delta from Atlanta (Saturdays).

Flying Into San Pedro Sula (SAP) Instead

San Pedro Sula’s Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) is the main international gateway on the Honduran mainland, and it has 12 direct routes of its own, including some you can’t fly directly to Roatán: Madrid (Air Europa), Mexico City (Aeroméxico), Newark (United), Fort Lauderdale (JetBlue), Orlando (Frontier), San Salvador (Avianca) and Panama City (COPA).

Flying into San Pedro Sula means one more step to reach the island: a connecting flight to Roatán, or a trip to La Ceiba on the coast for the ferry. For most visitors from the US and Canada, a direct flight into Roatán is the simpler option. San Pedro Sula makes sense when it opens up a route from your city.

Arriving at Roatán Airport: What to Expect

Roatán’s airport is small and easy to navigate. International flights park on the apron and you walk across the tarmac into the terminal, then clear immigration and customs and collect your bags. From there you step out into the arrivals lobby, where drivers wait holding signs with guests’ names and hotels.

The airport sits in Coxen Hole on the island’s southwest side, the same town as the Port of Roatán cruise terminal. The Isla Tropicale cruise port (formerly Mahogany Bay) is about three miles to the east.

One thing to know before you set your watch: Roatán stays on Central Standard Time all year and never changes its clocks for daylight saving, so its time difference with the US and Canada shifts in March and November. Our guide to ship time vs Roatán local time explains it.

Private Transfers From Roatán Airport

Skip the taxi line. Our private Roatán airport transfer takes you from Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport to your hotel, villa or vacation rental, or to any ferry terminal or cruise port on the island, and back again when you leave.

  • Private vehicle for up to 4 guests, luggage and bags included
  • To or from Roatán airport, the ferry terminals and both cruise ports
  • $84.99 per transfer, booked online in a few minutes
  • Local Roatán operator since 2013

Staying on the island? Our Roatán excursions include roundtrip transport from your hotel, so once you land you won’t need a rental car to see the island.
